What is black history month?
Black history month is the celebration of all thing's Black history.
In February we commemorate the painful past of Black people while celebrating their immense accomplishments to the entire world. It is a lifetime of learning our past and acknowledging those who have and will achieve greatness.
The older I become the more I have learned there were a vast amount of black men and women who never received compensation or recognition for their accomplishments.
I remember, back in school Black history was not taught from our history books, nor were blacks regarded as an important part of American history. Every year if blacks were mention it was the same people over and over again.
I must say I love the progression, with my high school offering a black history class as part of the curriculum for any student interested.
However, there are still some Caucasians who have chosen to believe blacks are not human and therefore not equal to them.
In every tally of hate crimes, blacks are the most frequent victims.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said "hate begets hate, violence begets violence" meaning he echoed the stance of most black people.
What a privilege to celebrate the courageous black men and women who died while shaping America against all odds.
Though the fight for equality still continues, so will we.
As we celebrate a hopeful future let's learn about those who have made history that are not well known.
